Terms of Service

1. Agreement

By creating an account or using the Slate app ("App"), you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms") and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the App.

These Terms are a binding agreement between you and Slate ("we," "us" or "our"). When we make material changes, we'll show them in the App and ask you to accept them before you continue.

2. What Slate Does

Slate helps you understand and pay down credit card debt. It:

connects read-only to your credit card accounts through Plaid;
reads statements you choose to upload;
shows your balances, interest, statements and spending, and builds payoff plans;
offers optional AI features, described in section 7.

Slate provides information and education. It is not financial, investment, legal, tax or credit counseling advice, and Slate is not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, financial planner or credit counselor. No fiduciary relationship is created by your use of the App. Consult a qualified professional before making significant financial decisions.

3. Eligibility

To use Slate you must be at least 18 years old, able to form a binding contract, and a resident of the United States, and you must not be barred from using the App under U.S. law. We may close accounts that don't meet these requirements.

4. Your Account

Give accurate information and keep it up to date.
Keep your password safe, and don't share your account.
Tell us right away at hello@withslate.co if you think your account has been compromised.
Don't create multiple accounts to get around limits or free trials.

You're responsible for activity under your account.

5. Connected Accounts

Slate uses Plaid Technologies, Inc. to connect read-only to your credit card accounts. By connecting an account, you authorize Slate and Plaid to retrieve your account information, balances, statements and transactions, and you agree to Plaid's End User Privacy Policy.

Slate can't move money or change your accounts. Your bank or Plaid may interrupt a connection at any time. Connect only accounts that you own or are authorized to manage. You can disconnect an account at any time in Settings → Connected Accounts.

6. Statements You Upload

Upload statements only for accounts that you own or are authorized to manage. You confirm every figure before it's saved, and you're responsible for checking it against the statement.

Reading a statement is an AI feature (section 7): the file is sent to Anthropic only after you allow AI features. We delete our copy of the file once it has been read.

7. AI Features

Slate's AI features (the coach, weekly insights, Spending DNA, plan explanations and statement reading) are written by Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, PBC.

They're optional, and off until you allow them. They send your information to Anthropic only after you allow it on the in-app "AI and your data" screen, which lists what each feature sends. You can turn them off at any time in Settings → AI & Data Sharing. Our Privacy Policy explains how that information is handled.
AI output is for information only. It may be incomplete or wrong. Check figures against your statement and use your own judgment before acting on it.
Use them responsibly. Don't use AI features to try to get anyone else's information, to get around safety measures, or to create harmful, illegal or deceptive content. What you send must also follow Anthropic's Usage Policy.
Share only what's yours to share. Don't put other people's personal information into the coach unless you have the right to.

8. Subscriptions and Billing

Slate Free

Core features are free. We may change which features are included in the free tier with reasonable notice.

Slate Pro

Premium features require an active Slate Pro subscription, bought through Apple's In-App Purchase. The price and billing period are shown in the App before you buy.

Payment and auto-renewal

Payment is charged to your Apple ID account when you confirm the purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.

Free trials

If a free trial is offered, any unused part of it ends when you buy a subscription.

Managing and cancelling

Manage or cancel your subscription in iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Pro access until the end of the period you've paid for.

Refunds

Purchases are processed by Apple, and refunds are handled by Apple under its policies. We don't control Apple's refund decisions.

Price changes

We'll tell you before a price changes. Apple may ask you to agree before a higher price applies.

9. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

break any law, or use Slate for someone else's accounts without their authorization;
try to gain unauthorized access to our systems, other users' accounts or connected institutions;
reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the App, except where the law allows it;
scrape or systematically extract data from the App;
use the App for commercial purposes without our written permission;
send malware or other harmful code;
get around subscription checks, usage limits or security measures.

We may suspend or close accounts that do.

10. Intellectual Property

The App, its design, content and code belong to Slate or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on Apple devices that you own or control, under these Terms and the App Store's Usage Rules. You may not copy, modify, distribute or create derivative works of the App without our written permission.

Your financial data remains yours. You permit us to process it only to provide the App, as described in our Privacy Policy.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We don't warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, that information in it will be accurate or complete, or that defects will be corrected. Financial data comes from third parties such as Plaid and your bank and may not reflect your account in real time. Don't rely on Slate alone for time-sensitive financial decisions.

12. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, Slate AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA OR LOSS OF GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE APP.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THESE TERMS OR THE APP WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) $50.

Some jurisdictions don't allow these exclusions or limits; there, our liability is limited to the greatest extent the law permits.

13. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Informal resolution: before starting a formal proceeding, contact us at hello@withslate.co and try to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days.

Arbitration: if informal resolution fails, disputes will be resolved by binding individual arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association, held in California. You waive any right to a jury trial or to take part in a class action.

Exception: either party may seek injunctive or other equitable relief in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent irreparable harm.

14. Termination

You can stop using the App and delete your account at any time in Settings → Legal & Privacy → Delete Account.

We may suspend or end your access if we reasonably believe you've broken these Terms, or for another legitimate reason. When your access ends, your right to use the App ends, and we handle your data as described in our Privacy Policy and Data Retention Policy. Sections that by their nature should survive, including the disclaimers, the limitation of liability and dispute resolution, survive.

15. Apple App Store Terms

If you downloaded the App from Apple's App Store, you and we acknowledge that:

These Terms are between you and Slate only, not Apple. Slate, not Apple, is solely responsible for the App and its content.
Your license to use the App is limited to Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store's Usage Rules.
Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App.
If the App fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, for the App. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App.
Slate, not Apple, is responsible for any claims relating to the App or your use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
If a third party claims that the App or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, Slate, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of that claim.
You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
You must comply with applicable third-party terms, such as your wireless data service agreement, when using the App.
Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, once you accept them, may enforce them against you.
