Terms of Service — SLATE
SLATE Terms of Service
Slate Technologies
Effective: March 21, 2026
Please read these Terms of Service carefully before using SLATE. By downloading, installing, or using the SLATE application, you agree to be bound by these terms. If you do not agree, do not use SLATE.
1. About SLATE
SLATE is a personal finance application developed and operated by Slate Technologies ("SLATE," "we," "us," or "our"), a company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. SLATE connects to your financial accounts via Plaid to help you visualize your credit card debt, understand the cost of interest, and create a payoff plan.
SLATE is not a bank, financial advisor, credit counselor, or investment advisor. The information, calculations, and suggestions provided by SLATE are for educational and informational purposes only. They do not constitute financial advice. Always consult a qualified financial professional before making significant financial decisions.
2. Eligibility
To use SLATE, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction, if higher)
- Be a resident of the United States
- Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement
- Not have been previously banned or removed from SLATE for violations of these Terms
By using SLATE, you represent and warrant that you meet all eligibility requirements.
3. Account Registration & Security
3.1 Account creation. You must create an account to use SLATE. You agree to provide accurate, complete, and current information during registration and to keep that information updated.
3.2 Account security. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You agree to:
- Choose a strong, unique password
- Not share your account credentials with anyone
- Enable biometric lock (Face ID / Touch ID) when possible
- Notify us immediately at privacy@slateapp.com if you suspect unauthorized access
3.3 Account responsibility. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account, whether or not you authorized it, except in cases of verified unauthorized access reported to us promptly.
3.4 One account per person. You may not create multiple accounts. Accounts are personal and non-transferable.
4. The SLATE Service
4.1 Read-only financial data. SLATE connects to your financial accounts via Plaid with read-only access. SLATE cannot and will not move money, initiate payments, or make changes to your accounts. We receive only the data necessary to provide the SLATE service.
4.2 Service accuracy. SLATE relies on data provided by Plaid and your financial institutions. We cannot guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of financial data. Account balances, transaction data, and APR information are subject to delays and may not reflect real-time account status. Always verify critical financial decisions with your financial institution.
4.3 Payoff calculations. SLATE's debt payoff calculations (Snowball, Avalanche, interest projections, true cost estimates) are mathematical models based on the data available to us. Actual payoff results will vary based on changes in balances, APRs, payments, and other factors. These calculations are illustrative, not guaranteed.
4.4 AI Coach. SLATE's AI Coach feature is powered by Anthropic's Claude AI model. AI responses are generated based on your account context and general financial knowledge. AI responses are not personalized financial advice from a licensed professional. Do not rely solely on AI Coach output to make significant financial decisions.
4.5 Service availability. We strive to maintain high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may suspend or modify the service for maintenance, security, or operational reasons. We are not liable for downtime or service interruptions.
5. Subscription and Payments
5.1 Free tier. SLATE offers a free tier with core features. No payment information is required to use the free tier.
5.2 SLATE Pro. SLATE Pro is a paid subscription available at:
- Monthly: $5.99/month
- Annual: $57.50/year (approximately $4.79/month)
Prices are displayed in the app and may vary by region. All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store using your Apple ID payment method.
5.3 Free trial. SLATE Pro may offer a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. The trial converts to a paid subscription automatically unless cancelled before the trial period ends.
5.4 Billing. Subscriptions are billed in advance on a recurring basis (monthly or annual). Your Apple ID account will be charged at confirmation of purchase and at the start of each renewal period.
5.5 Cancellation. You may cancel your SLATE Pro subscription at any time through iOS Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → SLATE. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You retain Pro access until the period ends. We do not offer prorated refunds for partial billing periods.
5.6 Refunds. Refund requests must be submitted through Apple (Apple controls all App Store refund decisions). SLATE has no ability to issue direct refunds for App Store purchases.
5.7 Price changes. We reserve the right to change subscription prices. We will provide reasonable notice of price changes before they take effect. Your continued subscription after a price change constitutes acceptance of the new price.

7.4 Your content. You own the content you provide to SLATE (such as your manually entered APR values and payoff goals). By providing content to SLATE, you grant us a limited license to use that content solely to provide you with the SLATE service. We do not claim ownership of your financial data.
7.5 Feedback. If you provide suggestions, feedback, or ideas about SLATE, we may use that feedback without obligation to you. You assign to us any intellectual property rights you may have in such feedback.

10. Disclaimers
10.1 Not financial advice. SLATE is an informational and educational tool. Nothing in SLATE — including but not limited to calculations, projections, AI Coach responses, insights, or any other content — constitutes financial advice, investment advice, tax advice, credit counseling, or legal advice. Consult a qualified licensed professional before making significant financial decisions.
10.2 No guarantee of results. Use of SLATE does not guarantee that you will pay off your debt, improve your credit score, or achieve any financial goal. Results depend on your individual financial situation, behavior, and factors outside SLATE's control.
10.3 Data accuracy. Financial data in SLATE is sourced from Plaid and your financial institutions and may be delayed, incomplete, or inaccurate. SLATE does not guarantee the accuracy of any balance, transaction, APR, or other financial figure displayed.
10.4 "As is" service. SLATE is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or uninterrupted service.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Slate Technologies and its founders, employees, agents, and affiliates shall not be liable for:
- Any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
- Any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses
- Any financial loss resulting from reliance on SLATE's calculations, projections, or AI Coach responses
- Any unauthorized access to or alteration of your data
- Any interruption or cessation of the SLATE service
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of SLATE shall not exceed the amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater.
Some jurisdictions do not allow limitation of liability for certain damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
12. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Slate Technologies and its founders, officers, agents, and affiliates from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from:
- Your use or misuse of SLATE
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your violation of any applicable law or regulation
- Your infringement of any third-party right
13. Account Termination
13.1 Your right to terminate. You may delete your account at any time via Settings → Delete Account within the app. Account deletion is permanent and results in irreversible deletion of all your data from our systems.
13.2 Our right to terminate. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at our sole discretion, without prior notice, for:
- Violation of these Terms
- Conduct that we determine is harmful to SLATE, other users, or third parties
- Fraudulent or illegal activity
- Extended inactivity (accounts inactive for more than 24 months)
13.3 Effect of termination. Upon account deletion or termination, your license to use SLATE ends immediately. Sections 7 (Intellectual Property), 10 (Disclaimers), 11 (Limitation of Liability), 12 (Indemnification), and 14 (Governing Law) survive termination.
14. Governing Law and Disputes
14.1 Governing law. These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Utah, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.
14.2 Informal resolution. Before filing a formal dispute, you agree to contact us at privacy@slateapp.com and attempt to resolve the dispute informally. We will make a good-faith effort to resolve disputes within 30 days.
14.3 Binding arbitration. If informal resolution fails, you and SLATE agree to resolve any dispute through binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. You and SLATE each waive the right to a jury trial and to participate in class action litigation.
14.4 Class action waiver. Any dispute must be brought in your individual capacity, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class or representative proceeding.
14.5 Exceptions. Either party may seek injunctive or other equitable relief in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent infringement of intellectual property rights or to address an emergency.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you via push notification or email and update the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of SLATE after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you must stop using SLATE and delete your account.
16. Miscellaneous
16.1 Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Slate Technologies regarding your use of SLATE and supersede any prior agreements.
16.2 Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
16.3 Waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms is not a waiver of that right or provision.
16.4 Assignment. You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights at any time, including in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
16.5 Force majeure. SLATE is not liable for any failure or delay in performance caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control.
